We have a walnut tree on site but there was no yield this year. Hungary usually produces approximately 6,000 tons of walnut every year, and most of it is sold abroad, the biggest buyers being France, Germany and Great Britain.
We found this walnut tree whilst out exploring the Koppány Trails that radiate from the campsite. You can wander for miles foraging from nature’s larder. I’ll be honest I have never seen a fresh walnut, just the ones roasted on the fire at Christmas, so I found this fascinating. Once the black sticky shell was removed the nut itself whilst similar to those I have tasted before had a clean freshness about it.
Sadly there is a species of fly called Rhagoletis completa which destroys walnut trees it spreading throughout Hungary and causing significant damage to their trees, which is very sad.
